Mammography:
Mammography is used to detect breast cancer. Routine mammograms, in conjunction with routine breast examinations have been shown to
lower mortality from breast cancer. During a mammography examination, the breast is compressed between paddles and x-rays are used to obtain images of the breast tissue.
This examination can be performed at Skagit Valley Breast Care Center, Skagit Valley Hospital, Island Hospital, and United General Hospital.
Interventional Mammography:
Radiologists who specialize in breast care are able to use ultrasound and x-rays to guide needles into the breast tissue
and obtain samples of
tissue which appears differently from normal breast tissue. These procedures are associated
with a low complication risk, and are performed on an outpatient basis.
Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy:
During this procedure, the radiology practitioner uses an ultrasound machine to guide a small needle into part of the breast and obtains a
small sample of the breast tissue with the needle. This procedure is available at the Skagit Valley
Breast Care Center, Skagit Valley Hospital,
and Island Hospital.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy:
During this procedure, the radiologist uses a computerized x-ray machine and intersecting coordinates to guide a
needle into the breast, and to obtain a biopsy specimen.
This procedure is available at the Skagit Valley Breast Care
Center.
