What is an ultrasound examination?
During an ultrasound examination, an ultrasound probe is placed on the body near the area of interest, and high frequency sound waves are then transmitted into the body. These sound waves reflect off of the body’s structures and back to the ultrasound probe. These sound waves are processed by a computer, which is used to generate images.

Who should not have an ultrasound examination?
There are no known risks or contra-indications to having an ultrasound examination.

Are ultrasound examinations safe?
Since ultrasound does not make use of ionizing radiation, and instead uses sound waves, it is one of the safes imaging modalities available.

What else should I know about ultrasound examinations?
For some examinations, you may be instructed to not eat for up to 12 hours prior to the procedure. You may also be instructed to drink water and avoid urinating before the procedure to fill your bladder.

Where can I get an ultrasound examination?
We are pleased to offer ultrasound examinations at Skagit Valley Breast Care Center, Skagit Valley Hospital, Island Hospital, and United General Hospital.
